Photographing a rain-soaked waterfall
July 2023
Photographer / Michiko Seike
June is the month of valley season in Kyushu.
During the rainy season, the amount of rain increases, and waterfalls and rivers flow abundantly.
This time, I decided to photograph two waterfalls in Oita Prefecture.

Oita has several beautiful waterfalls.
I live in Oita, so when I wake up in the morning, I often head out, relying on the feeling that "Oh, today looks nice."
The flower season is over, and until autumn arrives, my only choice of photographic subjects is valleys.
Especially in the hot summer months, going into a valley or waterfall makes me feel cool and refreshed.

When entering a waterfall, try not to carry too much weight with you.
Because the footing is poor until you reach the bottom of the waterfall.
I have one Sony α7R V camera and three lenses.
However, this time I was in a place where I would be exposed to water splashes, so I decided to only have one lens from the start so that I would not have to change lenses as much as possible.

As expected, when we arrived at the base of the falls, the sound of the waterfall was roaring with a tremendous amount of water.
And it started to rain a little.
But because of that, the rocks surrounding the falls were wet, creating a great atmosphere.

The Markins Q10i-RD that I use is an easy-to-use head with a large ball that stops firmly with little force.
And it can be used without slipping even in the rain or splashes like this.
The appeal of a ball head is that you can quickly decide on the composition in such an environment.
The Markins L-plate (PS-A92 + LS-A92) attached to the α7R V is very convenient because it allows you to instantly change from horizontal to vertical composition.
In addition, it is designed not to obstruct the movement of the α7R V's 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor.

Although the spray from the waterfall and the light rain that had started to fall meant that I was forced to shoot quickly, I was able to shoot efficiently that day.
On the way back, mountain hydrangeas were in bloom.
I set up my tripod just along the road and took photos.
The colors of the wet leaves and hydrangeas were very beautiful.

On another day, I was able to capture a rainbow in the same spot.
It was a sunny day, with the sun behind me, and the light made the rainbow shine like a dream.
I plan to enjoy taking as many photos of Kyushu's valleys and waterfalls as I can until autumn.
